Have people always believed in ghosts/spirits or is it a more current thing? When does the earliest ghost detective story you can think of come from?
Surely the subject must have always interested people...what do you dream up?
People have believed in ghosts and spirits for as elongated as we have existed with rational thought and communication abilities.
As brace, look at cave paintings which can be as long as 30,000 years old.

What is the oldest known artifact ever found or recorded in human history?

Whether it be a hard-cover, a picture, even a toothpick or napkin. I feel this is the most talented way to get proof of human existence.
I'd judge it must be a stone tool but that's not very evocative.
