Why is my record player really quiet with no bass? What do I ground the record player to?

I proper bought a record player and I am running it through a DVD/receiver. I hooked it up using rca cables but the astute is really quiet and there is no bass. I do not know what I should sod it to. Could that be the problem?

Years ago, all recount players needed to be run through a specific input on an amp called "phono". Now many record players have two settings..."phono produce" and "line output".
